We believe that innovation is central to achieving a brighter and cleaner future for our community. That’s why we’re replacing older and less efficient generation units with Newman Unit 6 — a state-of-the-art 228-megawatt natural gas replacement unit. Not only does this help ensure a long-term positive impact in our environment, it will also effectively triple our renewable energy resources.
- Newman Unit 6 is a state-of-the-art 228 megawatt (MW) natural gas replacement unit
- We will replace three older, less-efficient, unreliable units that are 60+ years old
(Newman Units 1 & 2, and Rio Grande Unit 7) - 600 million gallons of water per year will be saved
- Will be located at the existing Newman Power Station in Northeast El Paso, TX
- Will be able to turn on and off within minutes to quickly respond to customer energy usage and the variability of renewable sources
- Will simultaneously triple EPE’s renewable energy portfolio with the addition of 200 MW of large-scale solar power and 50 MW of battery storage
- By 2025, these efforts will allow EPE to reduce carbon emissions by 25%
- EPE is a regulated utility who provides electricity and does not produce natural gas
- EPE meets all environmental standards
